Lot Description
UNIVERSAL GENEVE - a gentleman's Polerouter bracelet watch. Signed automatic microtor calibre 215. Black dial quartered with white lines, dot hour makers, silvered chapter ring. Stainless steel case fitted to an unsigned stainless steel expandable bracelet. 33mm.
In 1954 the airline SAS were the first to fly the route from Europe to California via the North Pole. This cut a thousand kilometres off the previous journey but required the pilots to deal with the strong magnetic fields of the Polar Regions. Universal supplied the pilots with anti-magnetic watches during their training and in 1954 launched the Polarouter to celebrate this achievement. The name quickly changed to Polerouter and the bumper automatic movement was replaced with the now famous ‘micro-rotor’.
