A late 19th century Russian gold split pearl and gem-set novelty brooch. Designed as a fly, the amethyst body, with split pearl wings, and ruby cabochon eye detail. One split pearl deficient. Russian marks. Length 4.5cms. Weight 3.5gms.

Condition Report
Overall condition good to fair. Surface scratches and discolouration in keeping with general wear and age. Some file marks to the reverse of the fly. Marks for St Petersburg. Base metal replacement pin. The garnet has a pale purplish-red with typical inclusions. The split pearls are well matched with a slightly creamy-white body colour. Some show abrasion and peeling, one is cracked. The rubies are well matched with a bright red hue, strong saturation and typical inclusions.
