Lot 281
Lot Description
ROLEX - a gentleman's Oysterquartz Day-Date bracelet watch. Circa 1980. Reference 19018, serial 6460774. Signed quartz calibre 5055. Champagne dial with gilt baton hour markers, day and date apertures to twelve and three. Fluted bezel, 18ct yellow gold case fitted to a signed 18ct yellow gold President bracelet with Crownclasp. 35mm. Box and papers.
Rolex first ventured into quartz as part of the Beta 21 Collaboration, producing the Quartz Date in 1970. This was a success with the initial run of 1000 pieces selling out immediately but sharing a movement was never going to work for Rolex in the long term and in 1972 they withdrew from the project, spending the next five years developing their own quartz movement. 1977 saw the launch of the Oysterquartz and the Oysterquartz Day Date with eleven jewel movements finished to an extraordinarily high standard. These continued in production until 2001 when Rolex stopped quartz manufacture altogether.
