Lot Description

A very special full hunter pocket watch by Waltham. Presented to Signalman Albert Battlesby by Captain Walter Rowan of H.M.S. Princess Royal after he saved a young girl from drowning while on leave. Hallmarked Birmingham 1914. Signed keyless wind fifteen jewel grade 620 movement with damaskeen detail to the plates, club tooth lever escapement, split bi-metal compensation balance, and blued overcoil hairspring. White enamel dial with Roman numeral hour markers, sunken subsidiary seconds dial to six. 15ct gold Dennison case with engraving to cuvette. 50mm. 91gms.


The inscription to the cuvette reads:


Presented to Albert Edward Battersby of H.M.S "Princess Royal in recognition of an act of bravery performed when on leave after taking part in the Battle of Jutland he saved a young girl from drowning June 14th 1916. in his native town Birmingham.


This watch is presented with a Testimonial on Vellum from the Royal Humane Society and other items from his time in the Royal Navy to include a Great War Trio and miniatures named to ‘J.31960 A. E. Battersby. Sig. R.N.’ (Star Boy), together with Princess Mary’s Christmas gift tin 1914 containing a silver tipped bullet cartridge pencil and Christmas card, H.M.S. Windsor cap tally and British Legion lapel badge.

<li>Movement is currently functioning.

<li>Movement has scratches, marks and tarnishing commensurate with general wear visible to the naked eye.

<li>Dial appears to be in an average condition with some light marks and scratches when viewed under a 4x loupe.  Some of the paint of the roman numerals has worn away, most noticeably on the 3, 7 and 10 o'clock hour markers. The 15 and 20 minute indicators on the subsidiary dial appear to have been reapplied or redefined. There is a small crack to the dial near the 6 o'clock position.

<li>Hands show noticeable marks and tarnishing The tip of the minute hand appears to be bent.

<li>Glass has some scratches and marks when viewed under a 4x loupe.  

<li>Case shows scratches, marks and dints.

<li>Crown is currently functioning correctly; the surface has light scratches and marking.<p>


<p>This lot comes with a selection of medals to include A Great War Trio comprising the 1914-15 Star, the British War Medal 1914-20 and the Victory Medal, all named to ‘J.31960 A.E. Battersby. Sig. R.N.’  Together with the same trio of medals in miniature and a British Legion cap badge.   





<p>This lot comes with a box in used condition as well as historical newspaper clippings, photographs and medals.<p>
