A late 17th century walnut longcase clock of small size

Circa 1690
The 10-inch square brass dial having a silvered chapter ring with Roman hours and Arabic minutes plus inner quarter hour track and half hour divisions framing a matted centre with silvered subsidiary seconds dial over a terrestrial calendar within cherub mask spandrels, engraved "Joseph Windmills London" beneath VI, the knopped and finned five-pillar movement countwheel-striking on a bell, the case with a vertically-removable moulded hood with cushion frieze, sunken barley twist columns flanking inlaid frame, over profusely-inlaid long trunk door with oval lenticle, and a matching base with bun feet, 73.5", (187cm) high (sold with two weights, pendulum, key and winder)
Provenance: Private collection, purchased Phillips Knowle, 9th July 1997, lot 400 (sold with copy receipt).

Postage: Auction Default

Total lot weight: No

Dial - a few minor blemishes to chapter ring. Calendar ring is operational. Engraved name appears consistent (Border line stops either side of name and there is no sign of scratching out) but is not guaranteed and is sold ‘as seen’.
Movement - plates are raised on two small blocks over seatboard. Some holes (including large ones) to backplate.
Case - minor crack to one side of cornice. Very slight trunk door warping. Base possibly shortened (may have had a plinth). General wear commensurate with age.
