Lot Description

A fine early 18th century ebonised bracket clock.
Joseph Windmills, London, circa 1685.
The 7.5-inch square brass dial with silvered chapter ring having Roman hours and Arabic minutes with inner quarter hour track and half hour divisions, framing a matted centre with mock pendulum aperture engraved "J. Windmills London", with chevron-engraved surround, over ringed winding arbours and terrestrial calendar square, engraved "N S" over XII, within cherub mask spandrels, the chain fusee movement, now with five (previously six) knopped and finned pillars, and lacking one barrel, with verge and crownwheel escapement, the backplate finely engraved with foliage and engraved "J. Windmills LONDON", with pierced engraved back-cock, beneath a later carillon of five bells, the case having a finely-cast basket top with twin female terms to handle over urn finials, the glazed door with pierced mounts, on brass bun feet, 14.5", (36cm) high excluding handle (sold with key and winder).

Dial - appear to be sound. Signature seems genuine, sold as seen.
Movement - one barrel, fusee and winding arbor missing as catalogued. Some holes to backplate. L-shaped bracket supports are later. Other small holes and alterations.
Case - Loss to one side of basket surmount. General wrinkling/fine cracking to lacquer. Side and rear door panels now glazed, probably had sound frets originally. Rear door latch missing.
