Lot Description

A George II silver salver, the circular body with central armorial engraving, the applied cast rim of openwork form embellished with fruiting vines interspersed with masks and scroll rim. Hallmarked William Cripps, London 1752. Diameter measuring 8 3/4 inches (22 cm), weight 14 ozt (439 grams).


The salver  bears the conjugal arms of Thomas Neave (1761-1848), eldest son of Sir Richard Neave, 1st baronet (1795), Governor of the Bank of England and Frances Caroline ( ?-1835), daughter of the Very Rev. Hon. William Digby, Dean of Durham, who were married in 1791.


The arms are impaled with a shield for the augmentation of a Baronet signifying its date after 1814 when Sir Richard Neave, 1st baronet died.

The lot displays general scratches, marks wear and tarnishing commensurate with the age and use. Armorial engraving appears to be a later addition. Remnants of polish to the border and also with some rubbing and loss of detail. The hallmarks are clear and legible.
