Lot 59

Lot Description

A set of four George III silver open salts, each of fluted oval form with reed border to the short stemmed foot, with later personal engraving to the underside of each foot dated 1955. Hallmarked Nathaniel Smith & Co., Sheffield (combined assay office and date letter mark), date letter not clearly visible, circa 1781 - 1808. Maximum length of each measures 4 inches (10 cm), weight 7.41 ozt (230.5 grams).

Postage: Auction Default

Total lot weight: No

All four salts display general surface scratches, marks, wear and tarnishing commensurate with their age and use. The interiors were likely once gilded but this is now very faded. Some surface dints and bumps. A couple of the stems are slightly compressed so that there are creases in the metal around the foot. The hallmarks appear rubbed but mainly legible with the exception of the date letter, which appears cut off.
