Lot Description

A trench style wrist watch once belonging to Lt. Col. J D Hignett. Silver case import hallmarked London 1918 with personal engraving to case back and to cuvette. Numbered 729787. Unsigned manual wind movement. White enamel dial with Roman numeral hour markers, subsidiary seconds dial to six. Unsigned black leather strap with base metal pin buckle. 33mm.


Lt. Col. J D Hignett (10th Hussars) served in Egypt, India and the Yeomanry. On 31st October 1941 he assumed command of GHQ Liaison Regiment also known as “Phantom”. Fellow members of “Phantom” include the actor David Niven. The existence of “Phantom” was top secret, and no decorations were issued in recognition of their accomplishments.

After taking command Lt. Col. Hignett lead a series of successful daring operations against enemy forces, including capturing an E-boat and gathering intelligence on German military installations in Dieppe. He retired from the army in 1946 going on to serve as the High Sherriff of Leicester in 1951 and was a respected figure in and around Market Harborough.

<li>Movement is worn with some surface rust and noticeable scratches and marks visible to the naked eye.

<li>Dial appears to have noticeable marks and scratches.  There are numerous cracks to the enamel.

<li>Hands show marks and tarnishing with discolouration to the luminous paint.

<li>Glass has noticeable scuffs and multiple scratches.  

<li>Case shows noticeable scratches, marks and dints.

<li>Crown is not currently functioning correctly; the surface has light scratches and marking. The surface displays heavy discolouration and does not pull out from the case.

<li>Strap is in a poor condition with noticeable wear, marks, creasing and discolouration.

<li>Buckle shows wear to the plating as well as marks and scratches.<p>
