Lot 110

Lot Description

A Victorian silver mounted glass claret jug, of cylindrical form with a bulbous base and rope twist handle, the silver collar decorated with twin opposed Scottish Highland scenes, one containing a stag and the other a huntsman dressed in kilt, all within scroll and thistle borders, having a satyr mask spout and the hinged lid further surmounted with a stag. Hallmarked London 1854 with maker's mark 'FF', possibly Frederick Fox. Maximum height to stag finial measures 11 inches (28 cm).

It is likely that the silver mount is from another jug and has been added/altered at a later date. There is a further metal mount around the base of the handle, also decorated with thistles. This piece appears unhallmarked. Repair to stag finial. Overall, the jug displays general surface scratches, marks and wear commensurate with the age and use, and also tarnishing to the metal mounts. There is some rubbing and slight flattening to decoration but it still appears in good condition. Hinged lid also in good working order. Clear part hallmarks to interior of lid. Further hallmarks above the top of the handle but these are partly worn and distorted.
