Lot Description

A pair of early Georgian silver open salts, likely George II, each of cauldron shape with ribbed rim, engraved bird crest and raised on three stepped hoof feet, one is also monogrammed, hallmarks are mainly indistinct but a date letter is partly visible, possibly 1746. Together with a further Georgian cauldron shape salt, a similar mid-Victorian example and a pair of late Victorian circular salts with gadroon rims. Weight 11.44 ozt (355.7 grams).

All the salts display general surface scratches, marks, wear and tarnishing commensurate with the age and use. Heavier tarnishing to some and also some staining to interiors. Some general dints and bumps, also some impressions of feet are visible, mainly on the Georgian and mid-Victorian examples. Crests and monograms are quite worn and faded. The hallmarks on the Georgian salts are very distorted and partly illegible. The hallmarks on the Victorian salts are all legible. No glass liners.
