Lot Description

A mid Victorian 18ct gold enamel stickpin. The enamel disc, painted to depict Grafton the bloodhound, from Dignity and Imprudence, within a plain surround. Signed and dated W.B. Ford 1867. Diameter 2.3cms. Length 8.6cms. Weight 7.3gms.


<li>William Bishop Ford (British 1832-1922) has paid homage to the painting, Dignity and Impudence, 1839 the most celebrated work of Sir Edwin Henry Landseer. The painting depicting Grafton the bloodhound and Scratch the West Highland terrier was commissioned by Jacob Bell, the owner of the two dogs. The painting remains the most popular of all Landseer's dog paintings of the 1830s.<p>

<li>Overall condition fair to good. Some surface scratches/ wear, discolouration and minor dents in keeping with general age and wear.

<li>Light scratch marks to surface of painted disc depicting the bloodhound.

<li>The reverse panel (with signature) is broken. A large section is deficient. As a result the part of the W of the signature is missing.  Further cracks are present throughout this panel.

<li>Pin and surmount stamped 18.
