Lot 46
A pair of George III silver mounted coasters.
Lot 46
Lot Description
A pair of George III silver mounted coasters, each of circular form with reeded rim above a punched and engraved border of floral garlands interspersed with foliate pierced circle motifs, the mahogany base having an inset silver roundel with a personal presentation engraving. Hallmarked London 1787. Diameter measures 4 5/8 inches (11.8 cm).
The inscription reads 'To Mr & Mrs Attfield on The Thirtieth Anniversary of their Marriage from Lord & Lady Castle Stewart'. There is also a handwritten note with the coasters stating that they were originally presented to the Attfields in 1926 and have since stayed in the family. Having remained dormant for many years, the Castle Stewart Barony was reclaimed by Andrew Thomas Stewart-Moore (1725-1809) in 1774 and he became the 9th Baron Castle Stewart. He served as High Sheriff of County Tyrone, Ireland, in 1775 and married the daughter of an Irish judge in 1755. In 1787 Lord & Lady Castle Stewart were very evidently domiciled in County Tyrone. Today, the family seat is still Stuart Hall in County Tyrone.

Condition Report
Both coasters display general wear and tarnishing in keeping with their age and use. General surface marks and scratches, minor dints and rubbing to decoration. Wooden bases are loose in the mounts. One coaster is in considerable worse condition with numerous small dints and large holes in the metal. There are also losses to two or the pierced circular motifs and the wood base can be completely removed. Slight loss of detail to some areas of decoration. The hallmarks to both are slightly cut off around the bases, there is some wear and rubbing but they are still legible. The maker probably Henry Chawner.
