Lot 510

Lot Description

An early Victorian silver novelty vinaigrette, modelled as a book with foliate scroll engraving throughout and a small vacant oval panel to the front, opening to reveal a floral pierced silver-gilt grille. Hallmarked Nathaniel Mills, Birmingham 1844. Measuring 3.6 cm by 2.5 cm, gross weight 15 grams.

Postage: Auction Default

Weight: No

Total lot weight: No

The vinaigrette appears in fairly good overall condition, displaying some general wear, surface marks, scratches and tarnishing in keeping with the age and use. Some slightly heavier wear around edges and to corners and also slight rubbing to decoration but is generally still good. The hinges appear in good working condition, although there are some small splits and cracks in the metal around the main hinges. Gilding a little faded, some scratched numbers to reverse of cover. Hallmarked to lid and base and these are clearly legible. Also makers mark and Duty mark to grille but small parts missing due to piercing.
