Lot Description

A pair of early Victorian silver open salts, each of circular bulbous form engraved with twin opposed crested cartouche within foliate scroll surrounds and raised on a triangular form pedestal foot with further scroll motifs. Hallmarked Joseph Angell I & Joseph Angell II, London 1841 and 1844. Height measures 2 1/2 inches (6.5 cm), weight 6.63 ozt (206.2 grams).

Both salts display general wear, surface scratches, marks and tarnishing in keeping with the age and use. Surface dints and bumps and the moulded rims on both are a little uneven. The 1841 salt has several large and very deep scratches visible to the interior, also a slight impression from the foot. Interiors were likely once gilded but these have now faded a little. The hallmarks appear a little rubbed but legible, maker's mark partly worn but still legible.
