Lot Description

An Edwardian gold, enamel and gem-set religious brooch. Of openwork design, the polychrome enamel Madonna and Child, with blue and white enamel and rectangular-shape emerald scrolling surround, white enamel cross surmount and graduated pearl fringe. Length 3.8cms. Weight 6.6gms. With Garrard & Co. Ltd. case. Pearls untested.

<li>Overall condition good. Minor surface scratches/wear in keeping with general age and wear.

<li>Piece does not have any associated marks with Gerard & Co.

<li>Replacement brooch fittings, discolouration/soft solder at fittings.


<li>Enamel damage to the baby Jesus and the Madonna's hand. Slight damage to enamel surround, small nicks.



<li>Pearls untested for natural origin.

<li>Pearls are a well matched pearly white hue, typical surface blemishes, slight wear to one pearl.

<li>Approximate length range 5 to 3.8mms, range from off-round to slightly bouton shape.


<li>Emeralds are in closed back settings, presumed foil back, one backing discoloured. Emeralds appear a medium slightly bluish green, the smaller appearing a slightly brownish green hue, with fair clarity and typical inclusions, the smaller with surface reaching fissures.<p>

<li>Stones in good condition with minor abrasions.<p>


<li>Personal engraving to the reverse '21st June, 1905.'.

<li>Slight file scratch and jeweller-type scratch marks to the reverse.

<li>Case silk lining signed Garrard & Co.
