Lot Description

An 18ct gold desk seal, formed as a sphere enclosed by entwined and gathered branches leading to the bloodstone armorial of oval outline. Length measures 3 2/8 inches (8.25 cm).


The armorial bears the arms of Tuffnell of Langleys, Essex impaling Tyrell for Lieut. Col. John Lionel Tuffnell-Tyrell JP DL of Boreham House, Chelmsford, Essex. Born on the 21st December 1842 Lieut. Col. Tuffnell-Tyrell was the son of William Michael Tuffnell and assumed the name Tyrell on succeeding his grandfather, Sir John Tyrell, Second Baronet of Boreham, in 1877.

The seal appears in overall fair condition displaying light wear and signs of use. The mount has small splits to joins of the sphere and with light rubbing throughout. The bloodstone and engraving appears in good condition. The mount is unmarked but tests as 18ct.
