Lot Description
An American mid 19th century 18ct gold aquamarine brooch. The oval-shape aquamarine, within a scrolling border. Personal engraving to reverse reads; to Ellen Stuart, from General Robert Stuart. Approximate aquamarine dimensions: 20 by 15.8 by 10.5mms. Length 2.8cms. Weight 9gms.
<li>This brooch is believed to have been gifted to Ellen Stuart, wife of General Robert Stuart, who fought in the America Civil War.<p>
Robert Stuart fought in various battles for the Union army throughout the American Civil War, being commended for gallantry at Brandy Station, Virginia in 1863 as Lieutenant. He acted as Officer-of-the-day at the Battle of Cedar Creek where he drowned in July 1863.

<li>Overall condition good. Minor surface scratches/wear in keeping with general age and wear.
<li>Small nick to reverse panel near brooch hinge fitting.
<li>Aquamarine has medium to pale body colour, fairly well saturated, with good clarity.<p>
<li>Stones in fair condition with some abrasion and minor nibbles to the girdle and facet edges.<p>
