Lot 12

Lot Description

An early George III silver tea caddy, the pear shape body chased with chinoiserie figures and scenes interspersed with flowers and scroll borders, crested cartouche to one side and the removable cover with flower finial, the whole raised on a similarly decorated and pierced foot. Hallmarked Samuel Taylor, London 1765. Height measures 4 7/8 inches (12.5 cm), weight 6.93 ozt (215.6 grams).

Postage: Auction Default

Weight: No

Total lot weight: No

The caddy appears in fairly good overall condition, displaying some general wear, tarnishing, surface marks and scratches throughout. Some minor surface dints and bumps. Some rubbing and loss of detail to raised surface decoration. Residues of polish. Foot is a little uneven and wobbles very slightly. The lid has a split in the metal along the join just under the edge. Also likely repair to flower finial. It is likely that the flower was originally standing upright but it now lies flat and a pin is visible. The hallmarks are located to the underside and are clear and legible, the lion passant cuts into the maker's mark. Lion passant only to cover.
