Lot Description
A George II silver swing-handled fruit basket by William Kidney, the oval form with armorial to the base, rising to the everted body with pierced lattice interspaced with scrolls, applied cast rocaille border embellished with alternate bearded and crowned masks amongst shells and floral garlands, the hollow swing handle on elaborate blackamoor mask supports, all raised on an applied cast base formed as an openwork apron of female masks and flanked by foliate scrolls on lion mask feet. Maximum length measuring 13 3/4 inches (35 cm), weight 76.8 ozt (2389 grams). Hallmarked William Kidney, London 1740
The later engraved armorial appears to be the arms of CHAPLIN of Blankney and of Tathwell, Lincs. impaling FANE for the marriage (17 Sept 1812) of Charles Chaplin (1786- 1859 ) DL, JP, MP for Lincolnshire (1818-31) to Caroline, daughter of Hon. Henry Fane of Fulbeck, Lincs.
Provenance: Bonhams, Fine Silver and Gold Boxes, 13 November 2013 Believed to be former property of Sir Eric Campbell Geddes, (1875-1937), First Lord of the Admiralty. Presented as a gift of friendship and shared common interests during the war years to Edward Bennett Germain, Sr., former head of Dunlop Tyre and Rubber Company.

Condition Report
The basket appears in good overall condition, displaying some general wear, tarnishing, surface marks and scratches commensurate with the age and use. A few minor dints, including to the handle. A couple of small repairs to areas of the pierced decoration. The hinges of the swing handle appear in good working order. Some rubbing and slight loss of detail to areas of the decoration, in particular to the facial details of some of the masks. The hallmarks are located to the underside and are clear and legible. No part hallmarks visible to the handle. Possible small minor repair to the inside of the handle.
