Lot 370

Lot Description

An Edwardian silver four piece tea service comprising teapot, hot water pot, twin-handled sugar bowl and cream jug, each of compressed circular form and ornately decorated throughout with floral and foliate scrolls, scale and diaper patterns surrounding monogrammed cartouche, with applied gadroon rims interspersed with similar decorative motifs and cherub heads, with stained wood handles to tea and hot water pots. Hallmarked Elkington & Co Ltd., Birmingham 1902 (cream jug 1901), also with impressed makers name. Maximum length of teapot measuring 11 inches (28 cm), gross weight 79.62 ozt (2476 grams).

The tea set appears in fairly good overall condition, displaying some general tarnishing, surface wear, marks and scratches commensurate with age and use. A few minor dints, mainly visible to spout of cream jug. Interiors were likely once gilded but this is now very faded to the tea and hot water pots. Hinged lids appear in good working order. Hallmarks are clear and legible, also part hallmarks to hinged lids. There is a slight difference to the wood handles on the tea and hot water pots and the pattern number on the hot water pot (18779) is slightly different to the pattern numbers on the other three pieces (18799). So it is possible that the hot water pot was not originally in the same set as the rim decoration is also slightly different.
