Lot 62

Lot Description

A mid-Victorian silver christening mug, of tapered form having a scroll handle with mask surmount and raised upon a stepped foot, the whole engraved with radiating etched waves within four panels behind a banded personal inscription, hallmarked Fenton Brothers (John Frederick Fenton & Frank Fenton), Sheffield probably 1874, alongside Victorian registration mark. Maximum height measures inclusive of handle 3 6/8 inches (9.5 cm), weight 4.7 ozt (147.5 grams).

'Presented To James Ovenstone By His Father's Friend J. H. Redman. London. Aug. 1883.'

Postage: Auction Default

Total lot weight: No

In good condition, the lot displays general surface scratches, marks, wear and tarnishing commensurate with the age and use. The foot is slightly compressed causing the mug to tilt and wobble. The circular body is slightly mis-shaped to the top rim. Heavier tarnishing and loss of definition along edges, corners and decoration. Hallmarks clear and legible, apart from the date letter which is slightly obscured between a C - 1870 or G -1874, alongside a Victorian registration mark.
