Lot 692
Lot Description
Follower of Anton Alexander von Werner, (German, 1843-1915),
A fine large oil on canvas, 'Im Etappenquartier vor Paris', (A Billet outside Paris), soldiers gather around a grand piano listening to a recital in an opulent interior, indistinctly signed 'P. [or T.] Heymann [Heismann?] Berlin N. W.' lower left, 42" x 57.75", (107cm x 146.5cm), in gilt slip and good gilt frame, labels verso of Haynes Fine Art of Broadway and of 'Binyon-O'Keefe Fireproof Storage Co. 801 Commerce Street Fort Worth Texas', inscribed thereon "Soldiers at Piano / Painting from N. Y.", (canvas relined).
This work, closely matching Werner's 1894 original in the Alte Nationalgalerie, Berlin, depicts German troops occupying the Chateau de Brunoy near Paris, during the Franco-Prussian War of 1870. Werner was at the Chateau in 1870 accompanying Chief of Prussian General Staff Helmuth von Moltke when he executed a sketch which later became the finished work.

Condition Report
Canvas is taut, loose second skin detectable verso. Centre of painting looks restored to naked eye - sheet music to piano 'glows' and lid of piano appears less competently painted than remainder, suggesting damage to centre of painting.
Otherwise still life and figure elements are of very good quality. Artist as read (Heymann/Heismann) not found during research.
