Lot Description
PANERAI - a very rare and special Second World War military Diver wrist watch. Stainless steel case with engraved case back. Reference 3646, serial 1010292. Signed manual wind Rolex movement. Black dial with baton hour markers, quarterly Arabic numerals. Fitted to an unsigned brown leather strap with original base metal pin buckle. 47mm.
This watch was used by frogmen "Kampfschwimmer" of the German and Italian navy during the Second World War. It was brought back to Britain by an English soldier at the end of the war, after the watch came into his care following the Battle of Nijmegen in 1944. It comes with the original leather strap and pin buckle, a hand written account of the event by the soldier who brought it home, as well as a segment of the rubber suit worn by the German frogman who was issued with this watch. Together with a selection of facsimile documents detailing the military history of the English soldier.

<li>Dial appears to have noticeable marks and scratches. Discolouration to number twelve.
<li>Hands show marks and tarnishing with discolouration to the luminous paint. The hands show signs of being repainted.
<li>Glass has noticeable scuffs and multiple scratches.
<li>Case shows noticeable scratches, marks and dints.
<li>Crown screws down and has noticeable scratches and dinting.
<li>Strap shows wear with visible marks, creasing and discolouration.
<li>Buckle shows wear to the plating as well as marks and scratches.<p>
