A late 19th century fire opal carving, depicting the bust of Athena, mounted as a stickpin.

<li>Discolouration, scratch marks and minor dents in keeping with age.
<li>Opal varies in hue from a milky white though to a medium orange. Varied play of colour, predominantly green and blue hues.
<li>Opal shows crazing/cracks, chip along the mount at the neck line toward the front.
<li>Opal has dark linear inclusions in the helmet section.
<li>Opal mount electronically tests as approximately 18ct gold. Pin electronically tests as approximately 15ct gold.
<li>Fellows uses a Thermo Scientific Nitron Handheld XRF Analyser to test metals. This technology is limited to examining metal to a depth of approximately 8 microns.
