Lot Description

A mid Victorian 18ct gold, green and white enamel and carnelian fob seal, engraved with a crowned EHG.

Length 2.9cms. 8gms.

 

This is the seal of Lady Elizabeth Harriet Grosvenor (1856-1928). The daughter of Hugh Lupus Grosvenor who in 1869 inherited the title 3rd Marquess Grosvenor and still later in 1874 was created 1st Duke of Westminster, considered by some to be the wealthiest man in England. The coronet showing her father’s status as a Marquess and indicates that the fob was created and intended for use in the period before her marriage to the 3rd Marquess of Ormond James Butler in 1876 (see next lot) and her father’s creation as Duke in 1874: i.e. 1869-1874.

Slight enamel losses to two of the tapered ends of the central teardrop panels, slight further wear.

Carnelian with minimal abrasions, engraving with varied wax residue.
