A Georgian plumbago portrait miniature of a young woman, by James Ferguson.
Length 7.9cms. 21.1gms.
Born in Banffshire on the 25th April 1710 to poor parents, James Ferguson had no education other than learning to read. Discovering an aptitude for mathematics and talent for drawing, he was sent to study in Edinburgh becoming known as 'Ferguson the astronomer', eventually advertising as drawing pictures in 'China ink' in Edinburgh and London where he died 16th November 1776.
