Lot Description

A late Victorian 18ct gold garnet-topped doublet and old-cut diamond cluster mourning ring, with black enamel cross shoulders and 'Remembrance' to the band.

Engraved to the inside of the band 'James Galbraith Lieut Col Com 66 Reg, Ob't27 July 1880' and 'Writ by a Friend and with his Blood'.  

Estimated total diamond weight 0.40ct.
Hallmarks for Chester, 1885.
Ring size S. 8.1gms.

Lieutenant-Colonel James Galbraith was killed in the Battle of Maiwand in Afghanistan on 27th July 1880. Fifth son of Samuel and Susannah, of Co. Tyrone. After Sandhurst he was gazetted in 1851 with the 66th Foot and served in Canada and East India. He commanded the 66th at Girishk in 1880 and died at Maiwand, he was seen kneeling with a Colour in one hand rallying the men for one last stand.

Garnet-topped-doublet is slightly ill-fitting in the mount, possible replacement.
Garnet-topped-doublet appears a bright, deep medium pink. Facet-edge abrasion and nibbles/small nicks.
Diamonds appear bright and well matched.
Individual size and setting of diamonds prevents accurate colour and clarity assessment.
Possible replacement gems.
Enamel shows general abrasion and small chips/losses.
Length of ring head 1.4cms.
