During the 1880s, many of Britain's most talented artists began arriving in Newlyn. These artists were drawn together due to their shared belief in the importance of 'en Plein air' painting and their desire to capture and depict the local fishing and farming communities. Amongst these artists was painter Ralph Todd.

Ralph Todd

Born in 1856, Ralph Todd trained in South Kensington in London, before travelling abroad to Belgium, Holland, and Paris. However, it was in Brittany where Todd spent time painting in artist colonies and inevitably met and became friends with the more popular Stanhope Forbes.

In 1883, Todd moved to Newlyn to continue his artistic career, but he was unsuccessful. A year after he moved, Forbes followed, soon discovering that his friend was fighting a hopeless battle with his artistic career, saying that he did not think Todd was very good.

Despite his lack of success, Todd still managed to produce some charming paintings, produced mainly in watercolour but he was proficient in oils too. However, after a while, Todd moved away to St. Keverne near Helston where he continued to paint, sometimes using the alias Rupert Meneage.
