Jane Birkin: an iconic name within the world of fashion. Effortlessly chic, Birkin epitomised the “this old thing?” attitude. So cool yet so casual, her French fringe, gapped teeth, and big blue eyes inspired one of the most influential designers to design his most influential bag.

The Origins of the Birkin

The story of how the iconic bag got its iconic name is particularly surprising. Jane had been upgraded on a flight to London and found herself sitting next to a man. He watched as she attempted to stuff her bag into the locker when everything fell out. He asked why she did not have a bag with pockets and she replied: "The day Hermès makes one with pockets I will have that".

Do you see where the story is going?

The man was Jean-Louis Dumas - the chairman of Hermès between 1978-2006. Dumas had her draw a design for him which she scribbled on the back of the aeroplane sick bag. Bigger than the Kelly but smaller than a suitcase. In return for letting him use her name, Dumas gave Jane a Birkin bag.

Birkin's Birkin Bag

Birkin bags have been popular since their conception. This is partly due to the fact they were especially exclusive. To buy a Birkin brand new, a client may be looking at tens of thousands of pounds, and months of waiting lists. It is no surprise then, that many owners of Birkin's like to keep theirs in pristine condition, rarely leaving their dust covers, and being reserved for special occasions.

Jane Birkin, on the other hand, stuck to her effortlessly chic style and her Birkin followed. Her personality shone through; her Birkin became stuffed full, like her, full of life. She once joked that it was her stuffed-to-the-brim bag that caused her muscle aches.

To the handles, she attached necklaces and bracelets, beads spilling everywhere. Stickers and patches made an appearance. Charms that she collected on her travels, and trinkets. At one point she even added a Hermès watch. She said that, although she didn't like wearing a watch, it was useful to know the time. Her bag became unique. She remained true to herself and styled her bag accordingly.

Of course, it is a personal preference to how you want to keep your Birkin. There is nothing more classy and elegant than a perfectly maintained bag. But equally, if you want to customise your bag, we have some suggestions.
