Kokichi was known for his lifelong dream of “adorning the necks of women around the world with pearls”. This has lived on through Mikimoto dedicating itself to the pursuit of beauty.

Mikimoto History
Born in 1858, Kokichi Mikimoto established himself as an eminent producer and designer of the world’s finest pearls and pearl jewellery. Natural pearls are exceptionally rare and were considered a luxury item only for the wealthy. As a result, Kokichi Mikimoto decided to try and culture pearls in an attempt to pursue his lifelong dream.
In 1893, he went down in history for successfully producing the world’s first cultured Akoya pearl. Kokichi continued his work culturing a vast variety of pearls, including South Sea cultured pearls which are the largest and rarest type of pearl.
Kokichi created the unique Mikimoto style by combining traditional Japanese metalworking craftsmanship and European manufacturing techniques. He opened his first pearl boutique in Tokyo, in 1899, constructing the foundation for modern jewellery production in Japan. He went on to open stores in London and Paris where his work was exhibited spreading the prominence of the brand.
The Auction
This truly elegant selection of Mikimoto pieces features in our most luxurious jewellery auction, Fine Jewellery, taking place live on Thursday 27th January 2022.
Starting at 10am, the auction includes 545 lots of wonderful and sophisticated jewellery.
