In this blog, we will explore the properties, history, and uses of rutilated quartz, as well as showcase some stunning examples of jewellery that featured in our recent Gemstone auction. Quartz is a mineral found in abundance on Earth and everyone will be familiar with the intense purple and yellow of amethysts and citrines, two of the many varieties of quartz we can admire in jewellery.

In our last Gemstone auction on 20th and 21st April 2023, these colourful varieties were not the only examples that shined.
When it solidifies in its purer form, quartz is colourless. Depending on the geological environment it grows in, other minerals might form nearby or get trapped within the growing quartz crystals.
This can produce not only beautiful but also scientifically interesting specimens.
Rutile is one of the most common minerals that can be found as an inclusion in quartz. The colours of this mineral vary from black to gold and its appearance within other minerals is quite characteristic and resembles straw-like inclusions. Excellent examples of black and gold rutilated quartz can be admired in a few lots on day two of our previous Gemstone sale, such as the lots below.

Rutile is not only present in quartz. Parallel rutile inclusions are in fact also the cause of the star-effect visible on the dome of other gemstones when cut as cabochons, such as sapphires and rubies. Lot 145 is a colourful example of sapphires showing this effect.
