Princess Margaret Rose, Countess of Snowdon was well-known for her glamours, party-loving lifestyle and free spirt.

Princess Margaret's Life in the Public Eye.
Born, 21st August 1930, Princess Margaret lived a rich and varied life. As the sister to the late Queen Elizabeth II, Margaret played an active role in the Royal Family’s public work. She dedicated her time to becoming a Patron of the arts and supported numerous welfare charities. In particular, Princess Margaret had a keen interest in music and ballet, becoming the first president of the Royal Ballet. Margaret’s decadent lifestyle and rebellious nature often caught the attention of the press. As the ‘party-princess’, she became known for her whirlwind romances and diverse friendships with celebrities, actors, and musicians. Consequently, Princess Margaret is often thought to be one of the most popular royals in modern history.
Princess Margaret's Jewellery Collection.
After her death in 2002, her Jewellery was accumulated by her children and exhibited before being put on auction in 2006. On the 21st of November, one of the exquisite rings from the princess’s personal collection will once again be going under the hammer in our Fine Jewellery auction. The vibrant sapphire and emerald ring was a gift to Princess Margaret from Lord Glenconner, and it bares a delicate engraving of the Princess’ royal cypher on the inside of the band – the monogram ‘M’ surmounted by Princess Margaret’s coronet. This elegant design decorates many of Princess Margaret's personal jewellery collection making each piece truly personal, special and above all regal.

Who is Dolly?
In addition to the personalisation on the ring’s band, the luxurious green leather case that the ring accompanies has the name ‘Dolly’ handwritten on the silk. But who is Dolly?
Dolly does not refer to Princess Margaret, but to Prince Adolphus of Teck, 1st Marquess of Cambridge, and a relative of the British royal family. Born in 1868, Prince Adolphus was the great grandson of George III and the younger brother of Queen Mary the wife of George V. Due to his extensive nine Christian names, (Adolphus Charles Alexander Albert Edward George Philip Louis Ladislaus), he was nicknamed among his immediate family as ‘Dolly’, a pet form of Adolphus.
