British Art Medal Society Medals

The British Art Medal Society (BAMS) has a rich history of collaborating with renowned artists and sculptors, thereby resulting in a wide-ranging collection of medals that depict everything from cultural icons to abstract ideas.

Moreover, these medals are exclusively available to BAMS members at prices just above production costs. This model not only allows BAMS to offer original works by diverse artists at accessible prices but also promotes the creation of unique art pieces.

Each medal is part of a limited edition, typically capped at 100 pieces. The subscription period remains open for 18 months, after which the edition size is finalised. Consequently, collectors have a limited window to acquire these exclusive pieces.

In addition to its artistic contributions, BAMS is a registered charity. They publish The Medal, a biannual journal released in spring and autumn. This journal features in-depth, illustrated articles on both historical and contemporary medals, along with medal-related news from around the globe. Furthermore, BAMS organises regular meetings and conferences while offering guidance to individuals and companies interested in commissioning medals.

This medal by Irene Gunston captures the stillness of night, evoking a sense of calm and serenity. Additionally, the subtle textures in the bronze emphasise the depth and warmth of night time.

Marian Fountain’s Shelter explores the protective qualities of a safe haven. Moreover, the interplay of smooth curves and textured surfaces symbolises a refuge where one can retreat and feel secure.

Phoebe Stannard’s Minotaur reimagines the mythical creature in a haunting and powerful way. The contrast between dark bronze and gilded details highlights the duality of the Minotaur, symbolising both strength and tragedy.

Jane McAdam Freud’s Sisyphus captures the relentless struggle and perseverance embodied by the Greek myth. The rough texture of the bronze and the circular composition echo the endless repetition of Sisyphus’ task, to demonstrate the reflection on human determination and resilience.

Bethan Williams’ Gwyniad is a tribute to the endangered freshwater fish native to Lake Bala in Wales. The silver surface is intricately detailed, with flowing lines and textures representing the fish’s scales. Additionally, this represents the rippling waters of its habitat.
