In Ancient Rome, a single solidus could buy you 10 bushels or 30-40 bundles of wheat in local markets. Today, owning one would be even more valuable! Each solidus was worth around 275,000 denarii and contained 4.5 grams of 24kt gold. The word "solidus" means "solid" in Latin, referring to the pure gold used to make the coin.

The solidus (plural: solidi) was a Roman coin introduced by Constantine the Great in 312 AD. It remained in use through the Byzantine period until the fall of the Byzantine Empire in the 15th century. It replaced the aureus, a gold coin in circulation since the 1st century BC. The solidus maintained a consistent standard for over 600 years and was highly valued worldwide due to its gold content.
Some solidi featured Christian symbols, including an image of Christ on one side, while others displayed a front-facing bust of the ruling emperor. Despite design changes, all solidi followed a similar format, with religious imagery and a portrait on each side. Early coins often had the mark "LXXII" (72 in Roman numerals), which may have indicated their value. New coins were issued with every change in leadership, resulting in many types of solidi, each with varying rarity.
As time went on, the gold content in solidi gradually decreased. During the reign of Alexios I Komnenos (1081-1118), the solidus was phased out and replaced by the Hyperpyron, a gold coin made with 85% gold.
Solidus coins are prized by collectors today, and their value depends on condition and rarity. They are considered excellent starter pieces, with many available on the market. Coins in mint condition would be worth far more today than the bundles of wheat they once traded for!
