In 2020 Bremont introduced a special collection of watches to celebrate the life of Professor Stephen Hawking. They included examples in white gold, rose gold, and steel. Very few of these watches were produced, just 388 in steel, and 88 of each gold variant.
The Bremont X Hawking Watch
The watches are stunning in their own right. In particular, they feature a grand date at twelve and an eye-catching retrograde seconds at twelve. The dial showcases a spiral motif in the middle, a gentle nod to Hawking’s work on black holes. The outer track of the dial has a red marker at 8 minutes, notating how long it takes light to reach Earth from the sun. The watches utilise Bremont’s Trip-Tick case design. It has a PVD-coated central barrel, which gives the watch a modern but classy silhouette. Thought has even been put into the screw-down crown, subtly taking on the appearance of a telescope observatory.
Created in collaboration with the Stephen Hawking Foundation, Bremont promised that a portion of the proceeds of each watch would be donated to charity. The most interesting part of the watches is undoubtedly the case back. They feature samples of wood from Stephen Hawking's desk and a muonionalusta meteorite. Additionally, they have paper from original copies of his seminal research paper numbered with the watch’s serial number. The desk was a favourite of Hawking, inherited from his grandmother, he had spent many decades working at it. The case back also shows a map of constellations above Oxford on the night of Hawking’s birth.
