Nelia Louise Cornelia Casella, (British, 1859- 1950), A late Victorian Arts & Crafts wax portrait relief plaque. Depicting a maiden half-length in gilt-enriched robes, beneath inscription 'O PRIMAVERA GIOVENTU DELL'ANNO GIOVENTU DELLA VITA PRIMAVERA' (Oh Spring, Youth of the Year, Youth of Life, Spring), 13.3cm x 10cm, label verso 'THE NEW GALLERY / SUMMER EXHIBITION 1899 / Title of picture: Spring. Coloured wax. Name of artist: Nelia Casella. Address: 1 Wetherby Road, S. W. Price £9 : 9 : 0. , a further faded label above, in mount, gilt slip and ebonised frame under glass.
<li>Nelia and her sister Ella studied at the Slade School of Art under Alphonse Legros, and in their artistic careers worked both together and separately, particularly in wax. A similar portrait, entitled 'Silvia Bella', is in the Victoria & Albert Museum. The sisters exhibited at the Royal Academy as well as The Arts & Crafts Exhibition Society. Both also worked as medallists, and their commissions included the seal of the University of Wales after the design by Burne Jones. Nelia and Ella lived at 1 Wetherby Road from 1884 until 1910, where their artistic and social circle included Ellen Terry, Henry Irving, Franz Liszt and Bram Stoker. As a successful female artist, Nelia left a fortune of £11,729 17s 7d, according to the resource 'Mapping the Practice and Profession of Sculpture of Britain and Ireland 1851-1951' (University of Glasgow).<p>
