Full Lot Description

A cased set of four George III silver pedestal salt cellars, by Hester Bateman, each of navette shape with caryatid style terminals, reeded, fluted and punch beaded borders and probably later decorated floral scrolls. Hallmarked London 1788. Maximum length 5" (12.5cm), weight 12.5 ozt (388.8 grams).

  • All four salts displaying some general surface wear, marks and scratches.
  • With some tarnishing to the metal and some areas appear quite dull.
  • With some surface wear and rubbing to areas of the raised decoration, causing some loss of detail.  
  • Some areas are likely later decorated.
  • Interiors likely once gilded but now faded; possible traces of gilding to other parts.
  • Without glass liners.
  • Hallmarks located to the base of each salt and all are legible.
  • Case displaying some general expected surface wear, with some minor losses to exterior and some dirt etc to interior.
