Full Lot Description

A 9ct gold World War Two Irvin Caterpillar Club member brooch named to Sgt. S C Alldis set with garnet eyes.

Length 1.9cm. 1gm.

Flight Sargent Stanley Cranston Alldis, 57 Sqdn, service number 1398378. On the 11th November 1944, he was a bomb aimer aboard an Avro Lancaster Mk 1 which took off from East Kirby at 16:54hrs for an operation against the Rhenania-Ossag oil refinery at Harburg in Hamburg. At 19:27hrs the Lancaster was hit by heavy flak. On the first impact one engine and rear turret were torn away. The remainder of the aircraft bounced and flew on for over a kilometre before finally crash landing near Beckdorf. Five of the seven occupants were killed. It is believed that he bailed the aircraft by parachute. He was taken prison (POW 1219) and held at Stalag Luft L7 Bankau near Kreuzburg, Upper Silesia.
