Lot Description

Early 20th century silver snuff and vesta case, the compressed circular form with a continuous band of engraved decoration depicting each sign of the zodiac with the relevant dates, the hinged lid engraved with a symbol of the sun and opening as a vesta case, the reverse of the lid with the date 1914, the whole engraved to the underside with an eye motif within a shield shape cartouche and above the motto 'Observo et Considero'.  Hallmarked Smith & Bartlam Birmingham 1913. Maximum diameter measures 3 inches (7.5cm), weight 2.27 ozt (70.8 grams).

The snuff box displays general wear and surface marks and scratches commensurate with the age and use.  Some of these scratches are deeper and more evident.  There are also some minor nicks in the metal and some small dints but generally the engraved decoration is in fairly good condition.  The hinged lid is in working order although it does not shut tightly so that there is a small gap when closed.  The interior was possibly once gilded but this has now worn.  There are also numerous marks and it is very dirty but most of this will probably clean away.  The reverse of the lid is engraved with the date 1914 below a shield cartouche containing a W symbol.  It is hallmarked to the interior base and although it is very dirty the marks are still legible.  It also bears registration number 596145.
