Lot Description

George III silver sweetmeat basket of oval form, the body with pierced panels interspaced with floral embossing and with twist swing handle, the whole on pierced oval footed base with rope twist border.  Hallmarked London 1773 with the maker's mark SW possibly for Samuel Wood or Samuel White. Length measuring 6 1/4 inches (16 cm), width measuring 5 inches (13 cm), weight 3.6 ozt (114 grams).

The basket displays wear commensurate with the age and use with general scratches, marks and tarnishing.  Remnants of old polish visible to the recesses.  There are some nicks and dints in the metal in places, especially around the scrolled rim and also a couple of splits in the metal in this area.  Hallmarks are clear and legible, maker's mark partly rubbed.  Maker's mark identified from Arthur G, Grimwade, London Goldsmiths 1697 - 1837, unregistered marks number 3808.
