Irish interest: A 19th century Belleek parian bust of Lord James Butler. The bearded figure modelled with head turned slightly to dexter, the socle with black printed First Period marks, 11.5", (29cm) high. James Butler, 1st Duke of Ormonde (1610-1688) was an Anglo-Irish statesman and soldier. commander of the Cavalier forces in Ireland. From 1641 to 1647, he led the fighting against the Irish Catholic Confederation. From 1649 to 1650 he was leading commander of the Royalist forces fighting against the Cromwellian conquest of Ireland. In the 1650s he lived in exile in Europe with Charles II. Upon the restoration of Charles II to the British throne in 1660, Ormonde became a major figure in English and Irish politics, holding many high government offices.
