Lot Description
A late 18th century inlaid mahogany stick barometer. (Peter) Rabalio, (d. 1791), the two-part brass scale with vernier and engraved detail 'Rabalio Fecit', the mahogany case with broken pediment over ebony and boxwood stringing. the exposed main tube over domed cistern cover, 38", (97cm) high. Literature: Gloria Clifton, Directory of British Scientific Instrument Makers, NMM 1996, p. 226 records Peter Rabalio as active circa 1787-1791 including in 1789 at 18 Edgbaston Street, Birmingham, and in 1790 variously at Joseph Smith's, Crown & Thistle (Leicester), The Dolphin (Coventry), Golden Lion Hamston Gate, Leicester), Mr Dewce's High St., College Gate, Worcester, and at the Sign of the Barometer, Edgbaston St., Birmingham. He is known to have advertised in the Leicester Journal in October 1787 and July 1790.

Condition Report
Plate - general rubbing to engraving (from polishing) but still legible. Some edge tarnishing.
Trunk - original pediment, but has loss to inner edge of right side (running front to back) and also lacks finial. General fine cracking to trunk, slightly cleaned finish but essentially sound.
