Lot Description

A good quality 19th Century French Jacob Petit porcelain mantel clock, and a matched garniture of vases

Circa 1850, the movement by Joseph Silvani, Paris. Having a 3-inch Roman dial (at fault) inscribed 'SILVANI...', the two-train movement, with silk suspension, outside countwheel-striking the half-hours on a bell, stamped 'SILVANI A PARIS' AND 'JB & H 834', the case of waisted scroll-edged form with gilt foliage and gilt-edged floral reserves on a bleu celeste ground, raised on a separate serpentine-fronted table base, underglaze blue 'JP' mark and further inscriptions beneath base, 15.25", (39cm) high overall, together with a pair of vases, each of inverted bell form with four-lobed crimped gilt rim, decorated with floral reserves as per the clock, raised on four scroll feet and an integral quatrefoil base, one vase restored, 9", (23cm) high, (3)

Clock - dial haircracked and restored, partly obscuring inscribed name. Movement appears sound. Case has some discolouration and possible old restoration to the tip of the leaf finial. General wear to gilding. Old cracking and a glaze blemish to one scroll foot.

Stand - light wear to gilding and rubbed where the clock feet have stood, but overall good.

Vases - ground is a shade darker than clock. Both are unmarked. Both exhibit general wear to gilding and some of the gilt 'jewelling' is missing. One vase has been professionally spray-restored some time ago, a haircrack is still evident and it appears that a piece was re-attached. It is also visible externally where the ground is slightly yellow and plasticky. There are minor firing cracks to the clefts of the lobed base of each vase.
