Lot 36

Lot Description

George III silver pair of small tureens and covers, each of circular form with gadrooning to rim and twin reeded loop handles with acanthus leaf terminals, the main body with engraved crest to one side and standing on a circular footed base, the domed cover with a foliate embossed finial.  Hallmarked London 1801, maker probably William Fountain.  Maximum height including finial measures 6 inches (15.2 cm), combined weight 41.78 ozt (1299.8 grams).

Total lot weight: No

Both tureens display general wear, surface marks and scratches and tarnishing commensurate with the age and use.  There are some deeper more visible scratches to both, mainly to the interior of each tureen.  There are various nicks in the metal all over and also some small surface dints.  On one of the covers, there is an oval section visible to the interior, most likely due to the removal of a crest and subsequently patched up.  On this same cover the finial appears pushed in slightly.  It is possible to see the impression of both finials to the interior of each cover.  Main hallmarks to the foot rims and part hallmarks to the covers are slightly distorted but mainly legible.  The maker's marks are more distorted and therefore difficult to read.
