Lot Description

A large Victorian ornate silver sauce boat, the body with floral embossing and chased with intertwining acanthus leaves, scrolls, eagle masks and wings surrounding dual asymmetrical cartouche, one crested, the high arch scrolling handle capped with a goblin mask and the body raised above three lion mask paw feet.  Hallmarked Richard Sibley II London1844. Height inclusive of handle 5 inches (12.5 cm), weight 15.1 ozt (471 grams).


The sauce boat bears the crest for the Barrington family (Barrington of Barrington Hall, near Bishop's Stortford, Essex 1611 -1833) appearing as a Capuchin’s bust in profile vested, with a cowl paly of six argent and gules, with the motto Honesta Quam Splendida. This particular motto was used by the family of the now extinct Viscounts Barrington, created in 1720.

The sauce boat appears in good overall condition displaying general scratches, marks, wear and tarnishing commensurtae with the age and use. A couple of small dints visible to the underside. The hallmarks lightly rubbed but clear and legible.
