Lot 13

Lot Description

George I Britannia silver tankard, of plain cylindrical form with engraved crest to one side above an applied girdle and spreading base, the hinged domed cover with scrolled thumb piece. The tankard has been recently professionally restored removing a later added spout. Hallmarked London 1716, maker possibly John Jackson.  Height including thumb piece measures 6 3/4 inches (17 cm), gross weight 25.2 ozt (783.8 grams).

Total lot weight: No

The tankard was previously altered with the addition of a spout and has now been professionally restored.  Insulators have been added to the handle and this has possibly caused the hinged cover to be offset slightly from its original position as it does not appear to sit correctly.  Overall the tankard displays general wear and tarnishing and surface marks, scratches and dints commensurate with the age and use.   Hallmarks are struck near to the top of the main body to one side of the handle and also to the interior of the cover.  In addition the maker's mark is also struck to the lower section of the handle.  One of the maker's marks is partly distorted, but otherwise the marks are very clear.
