Lot 427

Lot Description

A pair of Indian Colonial entrée dishes made by Cropley & Company, circa 1820, of oblong form with gadrooned rims to the detachable inserts and lids, the bases mounted with dual foliate scroll and turned ivory handles, the bases each raised on four shell mounted paw feet, one entrée dish crested and initialled 'R'. Marked to the bases and inserts only. Length including handles measuring 14 1/2 inches (37 cm), gross combined weight 190 ozt (5922 grams).

The entrée dish bears the crest and motto for the Robertson family of Strowan, Perthshire, originally the mark of the Chief of the Scottish Clan Donnachaidh.

Both entree dishes display general wear, some tarnishing and general surface marks and scratches, commensurate with their age and use.  Also various minor surface dints and nicks and many deeper scratches to some areas, especially visible to the inserts.  Some loss of detail to gadrooned borders in some areas and some cracks to ivory handles.  On one of the entree dishes, the mounts to the paw feet have considerably ground down, so that it now wobbles.  The covers and detachable handles are not marked, the handles have a few minor cracks and some areas of discolouration.  The marks that are present are slightly distorted but still legible.  Surface of tureens tests as silver.
