Lot 9

Lot Description

A George II silver cream jug of bulbous form, crested, engraved collar, foliate double scroll handle and raised above three hoof feet. Hallmarked Benjamin Godfrey London 1734. Height measuring 3 3/4 inches (9.5 cm), weight 3.9 ozt (121 grams).

Postage: Auction Default

Weight: No

Total lot weight: No

The jug displays general surface scratches, marks and wear commensurate with the age and use.  Heavy tarnishing is visible all over and it would benefit from a clean and polish.  On one side of the main body there are also remnants of tape and a large rectangular mark left from the tape.  There is some loss of detail to the engraved decoration and also several small surface dints and nicks in the metal.  A couple of the feet appear pushed in slightly at the join to the main body and there are subsequent impressions visible to the interior.  The hallmarks appear quite rubbed, especially the date letter, lion passant and leopard's head, which are partly distorted.  All marks however are still just legible.
