Lot Description

Alphonse - Alexander Arson (1822 - 1880). A late 19th century cast patinated bronze figure group of a game bird and lizard, the bird modelled with wings outstretched and looking to sinister at the lizard crawling up the rock towards it, signed in the cast, on integral polished concave oval base 12.25" (31cm) high and a pink granite oval plinth, 14" (35.5cm) high overall (af).

See Jane Horswell 'Les Animaliers', ACC 1971 p 249 where this sculptor is listed as "a pupil of Combette. He specialised in the sculpture of birds, both domestic and wild and exhibited regularly at the Salon from 1859 until his death"

Postage: Auction Default

Weight: No

Total lot weight: No

Has probably fallen forward prior to fixing on the late granite base, as there is a fracture at the weak point where the birds body joins the rock and the front wing tip has a slight crease as if straightened. Patination to base is greener than to bird. Bronze base is secured to plinth so underside cannot be inspected. Back of bird has been polished so feathers are not as crisp as elsewhere.
